Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, cited as the state's friendliest small town, is the county seat and the only city on the popular Door County peninsula (the "thumb" on the glove-shaped Badger state). The community was named not only because sturgeon fish are abundant here, but because some early settlers thought the bay was shaped like a sturgeon.

Settled in 1835 by Increase Claflin, Sturgeon Bay's economy originally was based on lumbering. That changed, however, when the canal linking Green Bay and Lake Michigan opened to shipping in 1882. The NFL's favorite "Titletown," the city of Green Bay and home of Lambeau Field and the legendary Green Bay Packers is a mere hour drive south to the inland base of the Green Bay.
