Ellison Bay: Wisconsin's Showplace
View Community Knowledge Bank | View All Ellison Bay Area MLS Properties
Ellison Bay, in the Town of Liberty Grove, lies north of Sister Bay directly on the Bay of Green Bay on Highway 42. The charming unincorporated commercial center, with its marina, beach, restaurants, shops, galleries and parks was founded in 1866 by Johan Berndt Eliason of Denmark. The area was eventually renamed Ellison Bay, and remains a favorite destination for those seeking a quiet place from the hustle and bustle of other areas of the Door Peninsula.
Close by, visitors and residents alike are treated to a truly grand view of Green Bay and the exterior bluffs at the top of the Ellison Bay Hill. One may also enjoy breathtaking sunset views over the Bay from the crest of Ellison Bluff in 174-acre Ellison Bluff State Park, where a wooden walkway/observation deck leads safely to the edge of sheer, 100-foot limestone bluffs. For the more adventurous, an enclosed catwalk extends out over the bluff. Shady picnic area and cool breezes off the water add to the charm.
Nearby Newport State Park, the most rural of the area state parks, has within its boundaries more than thirty miles of low stress, secluded hiking and cross-country ski trails, as well as the popular Europe Bay Beach. Located at the tip of the Door County Peninsula, the 2,370-acre Newport wilderness area offers miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, with camping at designated sites. Newport State Park may be the closest hikers will come to a true Northwoods wilderness experience in bustling Door County.
During Olde Ellison Bay Days the last weekend in June, the town fills with an arts & crafts fair, music and entertainment, a grand parade & raffle, Classic and antique car shows, soap box derby, food and beverage booths, kid’s games and more.
Ellison Bay celebrates its vibrant artistic community each year, with various gallery events, and visitors to Ellison Bay will find potters and dozens of other talented artisans plying their trade, from leatherworks to state and nationally renowned painters. A visit to the Pioneer Store, a local landmark that was destroyed in 2006 and carefully recreated to retain it’s old world charm, remains on every “must do” list for a visit to Ellison Bay. The Clearing, an adult education school in Ellison Bay that celebrates nature, offers classes in topics as varied as cheese tasting, syrup making, writing, theology, painting, and much more, remains one of northern Door County’s most important and popular destinations.
